WATER DETECTIVES

HERO

WATER DETECTIVES Investigation-based water education for ages 9–12

Why is a blue planet mostly undrinkable? Where does water hide — in jeans, in breakfast, under our feet? Detectives run real experiments, interrogate real numbers, and take home the empathy walk they never forget.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION

Detectives work in teams on one case file per session — the mystery is posed, the evidence is examined, the investigation runs, and the case is closed with an action.

The Brief · 10 min — The case is presented: a real mystery about water, phrased as a question.

The Investigation · 40 min — Hands-on: experiments, measurements, calculations, and structured debate. Teams collect evidence and record findings in their Case Files.

The Complication · 15 min — The twist: the simple answer breaks. Detectives learn that finding the flaw in a tidy story is what real scientists do — it's a promotion, not a problem.

The Action · 15 min — What do we do with what we now know? Every case ends with a real, doable action taken home.

TOTAL: 90 minutes · Ideal group: 10–25 children · One facilitator

THE SEVEN CASE FILES

WHAT CHILDREN TAKE HOME

  • A completed Case File — their own recorded evidence and conclusions

  • Their measurable promise (e.g. "reduce our shower by two minutes, logged for a month")

  • The habit of asking "where did this number come from?" — the most transferable skill we teach

WHAT SCHOOLS RECEIVE

  • Case file masters (printable)

  • Experiment guides with substitution lists

  • Alignment notes for science curriculum units (water cycle, states of matter, environment)

  • A class results summary — what your students found

SIGNATURE ACTIVITIES —
THE ONES THEY REMEMBER

The Bucket Demonstration — All the water on Earth, in one bucket. Watch what's left when you remove the oceans, the ice, the groundwater. What remains is why this work matters.

The 20-Litre Walk — Millions of girls their age walk for water every day. Carrying 20 litres across the schoolyard for one hundred metres turns a statistic into empathy.

The Sand Sleuth — Sieve "clean" beach or playground sand onto a white cloth. What remains is the case file that changes how they see every beach for the rest of their lives.
