MICROPLASTICS & HUMAN HEALTH
HERO
NEW — MICROPLASTICS & HUMAN HEALTH A science-honest module for both tracks
Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, and even the placenta. But what does the science actually say — and what doesn't it say yet? This module teaches children to hold both answers at once: presence is proven, harm is not yet established.

WHY WE TEACH IT THIS WAY
We could scare children. It would be easy, and some organisations do. Instead, we teach what the evidence shows, what it doesn't, and how scientists work through uncertainty — including the remarkable story of a false positive that better methods later exposed. Children leave understanding plastics in the ocean and how real science corrects itself.
IN EACH TRACK:
Ages 5–8 — "Drop Meets the Tiny Pieces" A gentle addition to the story world. No health-scare content — young children need wonder and agency, not fear.
Ages 9–12 — "The Case of the Plastic Inside Us" Evidence stations, a known-versus-unknown round table, and a hands-on experiment. Detectives separate what is known, suspected, and unknown — and learn why that distinction is the whole game.
BACKGROUND FOR
TEACHERS AND PARENTS
Microplastics have been detected in human blood, stool, lungs, placenta, umbilical cord blood, and arterial plaque. Leading systematic reviews (2025–26) conclude that current studies are too small and methodologically uneven to establish specific health effects. Exposure estimates widely cited in media are modelled figures, not direct measurements. We teach children both facts — and the difference between them.
